Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is based on the theory that our beliefs or cognitions can affect our feelings and behavior. It is a highly structured therapy in which the therapist works with a client to uncover unhealthy or mistaken assumptions and belief patterns that cause self-destructive behavior or emotional challenges. The therapy challenges unhealthy patterns of beliefs and builds more constructive thought patterns. Though used to treat mental health conditions such as depression, it can be helpful in dealing with other issues.
Mental health conditions that may improve with CBT are:
- Anxiety disorders
- Bipolar disorders
- Eating disorders
- Sleep disorders
- Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
- Personality disorders
- Post –traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- Physical symptoms
