Restriction, purging, overeating or relentless preoccupation with food, calories and exercise are typically seen as signs of an eating disorder. Eating disorders also involve an intense fear of gaining weight and unrealistic or irrational beliefs about body weight.
Eating Disorders involve strong emotions, extreme behaviors and unhealthy attitudes around food, exercise, body image and weight. Those struggling with eating disorders or eating disorder symptoms often have underlying issues around control, feeling unloved, defective, worthless or disconnected from themselves or others. Significant events like loss, abuse or family dysfunction can contribute to an eating disorder but are not predictors of an eating disorder.
Therapy can successfully occur in an outpatient setting for those who are experiencing mild to moderate symptoms. More intensive treatment with strong medical and nutrition components, is often required for those with severe symptoms. Different types of psychotherapies are used to treat eating disorders and may include Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness, Dialectic Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT).
