Spirituality means different things to different people. For some it involves the participation in organized religion. For others, it is more personal or private and may involve prayer, meditation, yoga or spending time outdoors with nature. Research shows that even skeptics sense the presence of something bigger or not so concrete than what we can see.
What seems to be consistent among philosophers and religions is that spirituality plays a role in our sense of meaning and purpose in life. When we are disconnected from our life’s purpose we often experience emotional pain that sometimes leads to unhealthy ways of coping including abuse of alcohol, drugs, and food, spending sprees and unsatisfying relationships. Therapy can help us reconnect or even discover our spirituality for the first time.
