Holistic health is an approach to health care that focuses on all areas of human functioning. You are more than the sum of your parts, which includes your mind, body and spirit. The mind is an individual’s thoughts, emotions, and mentality. The body is an individual’s physical structure. The spirit is an individual’s core values and sense of meaning and purpose in life. Each of these parts is interconnected and is constantly affected by and affects the environment in which we exist.

When one part is stressed or out of balance, your level of wellness declines. Holistic health strives to reset this balance and/or maintain balance in order to achieve overall well-being.

How Does Holistic Health and Wellness Impact Mental Health Care?

  • Each mental health professional implements wellness and holistic health interventions differently. What you can expect are questions about your self-care – that is, what you do to take care of yourself physically, mentally, and spiritually. Spiritual self-care may or may not have anything to do with religion. It may simply be about what you value and where you find meaning and purpose in life.
  • Your mental health providers will also make suggestions about how you can improve your self-care. This may be something as simple (or difficult) as decreasing or eliminating caffeine from your diet to volunteering in the community. Again, each individual’s needs and desires are unique. We are here to support and guide you on your journey.
